January 26… that’s a BIG boat

Today we went to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. That is one ginormous boat! We walked all over that thing and still probably only saw 10% of it. I had been on a WW2 aircraft carrier, but never a battleship. The US Navy donated it to the state of Alabama under the condition that it can be recalled to active duty if ever needed. Seems like it would be easier to build a new one than refurbish this one and then end up with 80 year old tech.

We also walked thru the USS Drum, a WW2 era submarine. I’d read a lot about that class of sub, but it was a lot bigger on the outside and a lot smaller on the inside than I had imagined.

At the park, they also have a lot of different aircraft and ground fighting vehicles. The B-52 was also bigger than my imagination, but I had imagined the tanks pretty closely.

A number of the aircraft were on loan from the Naval Aviation Museum where my friend Neal had told us to go, which just made me wish that much more that we had gone there. Oh well, next time.
