We spent the day yesterday at Petrified Forest National Park, including the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest. HUGE park. Don’t even try it if you don’t have at least 2-3 hours. We were there 5 hours and skipped a few things. The painted desert stuff is mostly up north, and the petrified wood is mostly south, so that might help if you have a particular interest.
There’s an old Inn, dating back to the 1920’s and rebuilt in the 30’s, which was THE place to go when tourists back then visited the park.

Besides the inn, there’s a lot of overlooks giving fabulous views of the colors of the painted desert areas.

Blue Mesa is a must see! Take the walk down into the bowl where you’ll be surrounded by bands of color and lots of petrified wood.

My other favorite was the Crystal Forest area. A long walk thru TONS of petrified wood. Pieces, chunks, stumps, whole logs. It all over the place.
