Yesterday we went for another bike ride on the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. That’s the old Highway 30, which was the first paved road in Oregon, built in the early 1900’s. It follows the Columbia River all the way along the gorge for mile after mile.
Some of it was overtaken when Interstate 84 was built, but a lot is still there. And some of it has been turned into a walking/biking trail. A long paved ribbon, with beautiful bridges, tunnels, overpasses and underpasses. It naturally follows the cliff side, over the river, train tracks and highway.
As we rode, we perched on the side of the cliff and were able to watch a river cruise ship go through the locks at a town named, appropriately enough, Cascade Locks OR.
They filled the lock, opened the doors, we watched the ship enter, then the doors closed and the water dropped down to the lower river level, taking the ship along with it. Very cool.

Today started with a GREAT breakfast at Multnomah Lodge. If you ever get a chance at their Sunday Brunch buffet, take it! Caramel French Toast!!! Mmmmm.
Then Susy and I walked up to Wahkeena Falls. Easy walk up to a very pretty falls and a small bridge right at its base. We could feel the spray right in our faces.

Next, we continued down the historic highway to Vista House at Crown Point.
Vista House was the original “rest area” on the scenic gorge highway. Perched high atop a cliff, it looks down on the gorge for miles in each direction.

After such a busy morning, we spent a large part of the rest of the day playing Rummikub or sitting in a hammock reading. Such a hard life. 😜
