February 4…. Emeralds

Today was another kayak day, because… Florida. We had a few cold days here over the weekend, but this week it’s getting warmer every day and today is wonderful. 75 and sunny. Exactly why we came. 🙂

We visited a place called Kings Landing, which is really just a place to launch the kayaks, but after a short paddle down their canal, it lets out into Rock Springs Run, which is the river flowing out of, you guessed it, Rock Springs.

Paddling the river upstream is called Emerald Cut. A very narrow channel zigging and zagging between palms and pines, trees overhanging the river, and some fallen into the water. The water is completely transparent, flowing over beautiful white sandbars where the deeper spots turn a fabulous aqua blue.

There were quite a few other kayakers and a few canoes on the river with us, but there were long stretches when we were the only ones in sight.

The water was a bit chilly at first, but in sunny spots it was a nice enough day to get out and wade. Susy was braver (crazier?) than me and actually laid down in it. Naah.

Plenty of birds and turtles, I even got a glimpse of a couple deer.

If you make it to Apopka FL, just north of Orlando, it’s worth a visit!
