April 4…. Volcano!

Was an exciting day yesterday, as I walked through the snowy woods, hearing Susy’s fearful scream. 😳

Before the excitement, we had a great walk through the ponderosa pine forest, snow everywhere and more coming down, drifting through the trees, crunching as we walked. Silent and beautiful.

After we walked for a while, Susy headed back to the truck, and I branched off on a longer trail. That’s when I heard the scream. As I ran my big ass through the woods, dodging trees and boulders and snow drifts, I came over the hill to see Susanne getting into the truck with someone that looked suspiciously like my son Ray, which was impossible, because he’s back in Cumming.

Eventually my heart slowed and I was finally able to breathe again, and had a wonderful reunion with Ray and dinner with him at our favorite Flagstaff restaurant, HuHot Mongolian BBQ.

Today, Susy and I visited Sunset Crater National Monument, a remnant of a recent volcano. Only a thousand years old. In actuality, there are the remains of almost 600 volcanos in the nearby San Francisco Mtn area. Walking through lava fields and up the steep side of the mountain, I made it to the top of the remains of the Lenox volcano and looked breathlessly down into the crater. Not much to see really, this crater was older than Sunset, and had been filled in a lot by that eruption. Oh well, it was a beautiful cold day for a walk in the woods.
