May 25…. Sing it, Willie!

In the words of the great Willie Nelson… “On the road again, just can’t wait to get on the road again.”

Well, here we are. We left this morning at the “post-retirement” crack of dawn, 7:30am, and headed north (even if the interstate signs did say west). Six hours later, we arrived at our first destination, Cave City, Kentucky.

We’re parked outside of Mammoth Cave National Park. I’ve been here a few times over the years, but Susanne never has.

Today we took it easy after setting up camp. A short drive into the park, we explored the visitor center, and then went for a walk in the woods.

A short way down the trail, we happened to pass the original, historic entrance to Mammoth Cave, and as we passed, the temperature dropped by ten degrees. Just for about 50 ft, then it went back into the 80’s. 😳

Looking forward to the tours we have planned for the week, we’ll be hiking in the cave for a few miles a day, a few hours a day, with our biggest hike, 4 miles, on Saturday. Have to wait and see about that one. I’ve gotten out of the hiking habit since last year’s trip ended. I’ll probably be half (or more) dead by Saturday. 😱
